TOU303 Tourism Management

Destination strategic planning for sustainable tourism

This undergraduate unit has been designed as a practical exercise in tourism destination management utilizing the technique of project management to undertake strategic planning. It utilizes a group project format to allow teams to apply tourism management concepts in a real context with a real 'client'. In 2004, all clients were shires in Western Australia.

The objective of the projects involves the management of tourism impacts in and on a destination. This leads naturally to strategic planning and a forward looking, critical approach to tourism development and management in the context of sustainable development and the so-called 'triple bottom line'.

This website contains links to the actual documents that formed the final product of the students' work for each shire. It is important to remember that these are undergraduate projects done under supervision of the unit coordinator, Dr. Jim Macbeth. Each group also did an oral presentation to the whole class and invited guests from shires, Tourism WA and a developmental commission. Each presentation utilized PowerPoint to enhance the professionalism of the work.
